While at UCLA, Dr. Lofthus immersed himself in research within the Departments of Radiology and Periodontology.
After graduation, he was accepted into the general practice residency program at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco.

His advanced specialty training in Periodontics took place at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA, where he served as Chief Resident.
