About Dr. Lofthus
Dr. John E. Lofthus D.D.S.
Bio
John Lofthus received his BS degree in Biological Sciences and graduated with honors from the University of Southern California. He received his dental degree from UCLA where he received numerous commendations for exceptional performance and graduated with honors. He was involved in scientific research in the Departments of Radiology and Periodontology while at UCLA. After graduation he attended a general practice residency at the Veterans Adminstration Medical Center in San Francisco with a focus on periodontal and oral surgery. While there he participated in a study of edentulous ridge augmentation techniques.
He received his graduate training in Periodontics from the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA. In his final year of residency he was the chief resident of the Dental Service. He also performed periodontal research at UCLA and has published articles related to those studies in the Journal of Periodontology. Dr. Lofthus has lectured on a wide range of periodontal and dental implant topics. Before moving to San Diego and starting a private practice, Dr. Lofthus was part-time faculty at the UCLA school of Dentistry.
Dr. Lofthus is a member of a number of prestigious dental organizations including the American Academy of Periodontology, the Academy of Osseointegration and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is a faculty club member of Spear Education and runs a local Spear Study Club. He is also a member of the American Dental Society and the California Dental Association and the San Diego Dental Society. Dr. Lofthus has practiced periodontics and placed dental implants in San Diego since 1989. He has been in private practice in La Jolla since 1992.
Dr. Lofthus and his wife, Laura have two sons. His interests include bicycling, hiking, fitness and travel.
